Weighing in at an estimated 1,000 pounds and well off the nearest road, the skeleton of “Joe” couldn’t simply be carried out. The solution? A helicopter! Helicopters are widely used in fieldwork in many areas, helping to ferry supplies into and fossils out of difficult-to-reach regions.
The fossil of “Joe” was loaded into a cargo net, and along came the helicopter to drop it into the back of a truck. It was all over within a matter of minutes! The video below captures the experience of the helicopter lift.
